University College Cork

Julie Feeney, Iarla Ó Lionáird, the Quiet Music Ensemble and The Quiet Club come together to present a benefit concert in aid of the GOAL Haiti Appeal on April 30 in the Glucksman Gallery, UCC. Taking its title from the names of two of the participating groups, CIÚIN: Quiet Music for Haiti promises to be an evening of reflection featuring diverse sounds and musics.

Choice Music Prize winner and UCC Music graduate Julie Feeney returns to Cork for this special concert for Haiti. Julie’s uniquely creative art-pop has won her critical and popular acclaim in Ireland and abroad. Equally compelling performing with a string orchestra, pop band or solo, Julie has captivated audiences singing original songs from her albums, 13 Songs and Pages.

Iarla Ó Lionáird has established himself both as a masterful exponent of sean nós song and as a pioneer in its renewal and development. Signed to the prestigious Realworld label in the mid 1990’s he went on to make several ground breaking recordings with the multi-million-selling Afro Celt Soundsystem and achieved two Grammy nominations. Ó Lionáird has also explored other musical genres; last year appearing with the Dublin based Crash Ensemble at New York’s Bang On a Can Festival, premiering a new vocal work Grá agus Bás, composed for Iarla by Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy.

Composer, performer and UCC lecturer in Music, John Godfrey, formed the Quiet Music Ensemble in 2008. The ensemble is dedicated to the performance of experimental music, cross-disciplinary collaborative artistic creativity, and the promotion of a Cork-based identity. The ensemble includes musicians from a wide range of backgrounds, with Ilse de Ziah on cello, Roddy O'Keeffe on trombone, Jesse Ronneau on bass and John Godfrey electric guitar.

The Quiet Club was formed in 2006 by Danny Mc Carthy and Mick O’Shea two of Irelands foremost sound artists as an outlet for their own work and that of other artists. They perform using a wide mixture of sound sources ranging from circuit bending, homemade instruments, amplified textures, stones, Theremins, oscillators and various other electronic devices. Their first CD TESLA is out on Farpoint Recordings.
