The work follows on from artist, Danny McCarthy’s ongoing interest in acoustic ecology and the sounds that are disappearing or have disappeared from our daily lives. The sound of the anvil was once a sound that was part of every village and town in Ireland and has now completely disappeared from the soundscape.The blacksmith once could say “he made the tools for every trade including his own” but the sound of the anvil is now gone.

For this year’s festival McCarthy will bring the sound of the anvil back to Skibbereen but in a quite ghostlike manner, the sound will appear in a random manner from the lane-ways of Skibbereen .
