“The Certainty Of Chance”

Sound Installation

Danny McCarthy

Focusing on the small sounds that most people ignore or don’t hear McCarthy delves into the minute sounds of card playing. Making field recordings of cards being dealt, shuffled, cut, played etc. he made a pallet of small sounds to work with and create this new sound work “The Certainty Of Chance”. The work also incorporates many visual elements relating to chance and is of itself indeterminate constantly changing.

The work whilst presentable anywhere relates and resounds completely with the venue in Greywood Arts the building which in a previous existence housed an R.I.C Barracks (Royal Irish Constabulary) and also a sawmill in which in all probability the workers played cards during their tea breaks or after work as was the norm at the time in such situations.

Coming from a family of card players himself McCarthy relates to these “small sounds” and after spending a lifetime listening to them he still finds something new in them. His “Listening Practice” is central to all of his work.

The work can be seen/heard as part of MOR Artists Collective Exhibition in The Coach House Greywood Arts Killeagh.
