“River Ru(i)n” Danny McCarthy

Sound and Film Installation

Danny McCarthy was awarded a Cork County Arts Bursary to create a work for this year’s Midleton Arts Festival He will be showing a brand new AUDIO VISUAL work exploring the rivers around Midleton. A location where "nature" and "wilderness," "leisure" and "refuge" meld.

McCarthy has made a large amount of field recordings of the river over the course of the year from the hottest day in Summer when the river is at its lowest to Mid Winter when it is at it’s highest and in flood. From the “small sounds” that are almost inaudible to the angry sounds of raging waters. These have now been edited together to create an indeterminate multi channel soundscape and like the river it will never be sounding the same at any one time. He also filmed the river at various times also and working with “Twenty 4 Films” he has created an experimental film work that is part the ever changing soundscape.

Drawing attention to the dangers of pollution and the joy that can be got from the river by “Just Listening” McCarthy’s work promises to be one of the highlights of Midleton Arts Festival.
