“Healing Memories/Walking On Water”

Danny McCarthy

MyPlace Midleton Fri 24th 7pm – 9PM,  Sat 25th 11am – 5pm, Sun 26th 11am - 4pm.

A work dealing with climate change comprising of a sound installation, performance and photography. Utilising field recordings of rainfall and water made locally over several months he has made a work that is both beautiful and worrying at the same time.

The work stems from an image of a performance the artist did in Mallow Arts Festival over thirty years ago when the town of Mallow suffered annually from at least two or three floods per year including the artists own family home.

Flooding became a way of life in that all kitchen materials had to be several feet off the ground ie. cooker, fridge etc. and all floor covering had to be easily removed once a flood warning was given. The artist was reminded of this when the town of Midleton was severely flooded in October 2023.

This work supported by Cork County Council continues McCarthy’s involvement in this very topical area. He is regarded as one of the leading exponents of sound art and performance art in Ireland having exhibited extensively both in Ireland and worldwide. His work is in numerous public and private collections including The National Collection.
